Car drivers need to be very careful when making a left hand turn.

The Waterloo Region Record recently reports on a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV.  The motorcycle operator was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The accident occurred on Steffler Road in Elmira.  The motorcycle was travelling north on Steffler Road and the SUV was travelling south on Steffler Road just prior to the collision.  The motorcycle came into contact with the right rear passenger side of the SUV.  That would appear to indicate that the SUV had made a left hand turn into the path of the motorcycle driver.  There was a suggestion in the news article that speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Left hand turns by cars, trucks and other motor vehicles can be very dangerous especially for pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcycle drivers in the path of the turn.  The car driver’s attention is focussed on oncoming traffic, waiting for when it is safe to make the left turn, but the car driver may not have taken the time to check if there are pedestrians or bicycle riders in the path of the turn.  For example, at an intersection, car drivers may not have checked to see if there are pedestrians walking with the pedestrian crosswalk in the path of their turn.

When it comes to motorcycles, drivers have to be extra cautious to ensure that the roadway is clear of oncoming traffic.  An oncoming car or truck may be more visible than a motorcycle so it is important not to rush the left hand turn, but to ensure that oncoming traffic is completely clear and that there are no others in your path beyond the lane that you are crossing, like a pedestrian or bicycle.
