The US military pours $100 million into brain injury research this year.

Since 2007 the US military invested $700 into better understanding the long term psychological and physical effects of TBI. They announced another $100 million funding for this year. While this may not seem relevant to my practice at first glance, it is in fact crucial to the treatment and outcomes of many of my clients.

The research being funded for TBI from combat will directly benefit the civilian population as well. The massive influx of research money allows many paths of study to continue at once, perhaps leading to advancements and discoveries that might otherwise not happen. Some interesting findings and developments include:

  • Men and women react differently to the effects of TBI
  • There is strong evidence that a protein is released in the brain after TBI. This may lead to blood tests which allow for diagnosis of brain injury.
  • A new phone ap called Concussion Coach has been developed to help diagnose concussions.

According to Army Col. Dallas Hack many research findings have created even more questions about TBI. We can hope that one benefit of the sacrifices made by wounded soldiers is that they can help us better understand how to prevent, diagnose and treat brain injuries.
