COVID-19 UPDATE

TBI and PSD have been difficult to tell apart until now.

Traumatic Brain injury and PTSD are both common personal injuries in car accidents. Until now it has been difficult to make the correct diagnosis in many cases. A new large scale study of 20,000 individuals has established some clear cut signs for both types of injuries.

The 20,000 people in the study underwent SPECT brain imaging. What the scientists discovered is that although many of the symptoms of TBI and PTSD are similar, the researchers found that TBI and PTSD look entirely different in the brain. Using computer analysis the scientists were able to determine who had PTSD or TBI with 82% accuracy which helped to guide effective treatment for the victims.

It is important to establish the nature of the injury as many regular therapies for TBI can actually be triggers for patients with PTSD.
