Self driving cars need to smarten up

Google has now had their self-driving cars cover over 1,000,000 km of roadways. They've encountered most normal driving situations by now, but the 'unusual' ones leave the google cars at a standstill.

The cars are programmed to stop and refuse to go further when they become perplexed with a situation often leaving the passengers stranded. Google developers have found that they need to make the autonomous cars more 'assertive' on highways and at 4 way stops to make it clear to other drivers who has the right of way.

Google has taken reporters out for rides to show how well the cars drive through construction, around cyclists and pedestrians and of course, other cars.

Driverless cars are predicted to reduce the number of accidents and therefore injuries and fatalities on the roads.  There is some work to do before then though, like teaching the cars that an old woman waving a broom at a duck on the road is not a hazard to the car.
