COVID-19 UPDATE

Reducing urban speed limits to 40 km/h would save pedestrian lives.

Calgary, Victoria, and other major Canadian centres are investigating the merits of reducing the urban speed limits to 40 km/h. Reducing speeds to 40 km/h is proven to save lives. The data is clear that accidents involving pedestrians and cars are almost always fatal when car speeds exceed 50 km/h.

Municipalities throughout Canada and the world are trying to find tools to slow drivers down in urban and residential areas. Where the limits have been reduced municipalities have found that traffic problem have not increased, nor have travel times within the city. There are fewer incidents of road rage, and pedestrian collisions and deaths are reduced as drivers have more reaction time and are generally more attentive to their surroundings.

Challenges to reducing the speeds are the default 50km/h speed limits in most provinces, and of course, strict enforcement and education of lowered speed limits when they come into effect.
