Insurance Fraud

Anyone can be a target of insurance fraud. It is a criminal activity and is often highly sophisticated involving not only the other drivers and 'injured' parties, but also the tow truck drivers, repair facilities, and medical treatment centres. It costs an estimated $3 Billion a year, making up 10-15% of your insurance premium according to latest figures.

Fraud can be anything from manipulating premiums by lying about where a car is driven/stored (cottage vs. Toronto), to inflating legitimate claims, to staging accidents. You might think you are saving a few hundred dollars a year by claiming your car stays at the cottage instead of Mississauga, but if your insurance company finds out they will cancel your policy. Getting the scratched up hood of your car repainted after a fender bender won't hurt anyone right? No one needs to know the scratches came from your son's hockey stick falling on it in garage.

Perhaps the most troubling fraud comes from exaggeration of injuries, and medical services fraud. This fraud is not only expensive, but makes it much more difficult for people with genuine injuries to collect the benefits that they deserve.

The IBC has some great fact sheets on fraud. Remember that insurance fraud is a crime. If you suspect you have been the victim of fraud, or you know of someone committing fraud you can call crime stoppers and report it.
