Police will now have new tools in PEI allowing them to charge drug impaired drivers far more easily than now. The Highway Traffic Act will be updated providing quicker access to drug detection screening devices.

According to Minister Rober Vessey, “New technologies are currently being developed to help tackle this serious crime," said the minister. "Ensuring our officers are equipped with these tools as soon as they’re approved will help keep our Island roads safe.

The technologies include oral fluid roadside screening devices. Upon conviction the penalties for drug driving will come in line with those for drunk driving.

The province is optimistic that these changes will send a clear message about drug impaired driving.
