COVID-19 UPDATE

Car accidents in the Region involving children have been occurred several times in the last month.

The number of car accidents in Waterloo Region in the last month involving pedestrians crossing at intersections has been disturbingly high. Pedestrian accidents involving cars continue to cause concern for the police, and for the province of Ontario which is in the process of introducing legislation to help make roads safer.

We have seen several children accompanied by adults being struck at crosswalks. There are, of course, many excuses. It's dark out in the morning and in the afternoon, it's been snowing, the pedestrian appeared out of nowhere.

The facts are that anytime a driver approaches an intersection, a school zone, or a crosswalk, the driver must be anticipating the presence of pedestrians. The drivers must also be driving at a speed appropriate to the conditions in order to stop.  Too many drivers are travelling too fast on our roads, are not driving to the conditions (darkness, rain, snow) and are driving distracted.

Anytime a car hits a pedestrian there is one loser. The pedestrian will suffer injuries from which they may never recover. Please take some time to consider your own driving habits.
