Are you a biker or know someone who bikes? Cyclists have many dangers to look out for when biking on roads, but one danger people might not know is the dangers of car doors. Urban cyclists call it being “doored”; a term to describe the experience of a cyclist biking into a car door opening. These incidents commonly occur when a cyclist tries to bike by a parked car. In Toronto, one man was pushed into busy traffic and killed because a driver door opened.

How to avoid getting doored on your bicycle

So how can you avoid being ‘doored’? In a Toronto Star article that talks about dooring, “How to avoid getting doored on your bicycle”, it advises cyclists to be cautious around parked vehicles; specifically with taxis as many passengers come in and out. Check for brake lights or someone within vehicles.

How can drivers help? Interestingly enough, drivers can protect bikers by forcing themselves to exit their cars using their right hand. This action causes the person to turn, and helps the driver to see if any bikers are approaching before exiting the vehicle.
