Being A Good Lawyer vs. Being A Successful Lawyer

There is a clear distinction between being really good at something and being successful at something. Personal Injury Law is no different. I’ve been practicing law for decades and in that time I have had the privilege to work with some of the best in law, and have suffered through some of the worst.

It’s always interesting to me that sometimes successful lawyers aren’t always really good at being lawyers. It’s also true that many great lawyers aren’t very successful in the business sense.  In order to be a great lawyer you must possess a particular skill set:

  • You must be analytical
  • You must be a strong and effective advocate
  • You must have an expert grasp of the law
  • You must keep current
  • You must be passionate about what you do and your clients’ welfare

Being successful on the other hand means you have a strong business sense. It means you can:

  • Put yourself forward and sell your services.
  • Network across the others in your field and related fields.
  • Be an influencer in your field.
  • Be an effective public speaker.
  • Be an influencer.

When you are looking for a lawyer to represent you, you should consider these two things. There is little merit in hiring someone who is brilliant at the law, but is unable to put your case forward effectively to the insurance companies because they have failed to establish relationships, and have not established themselves as credible, fair and effective. Equally, there is not much point in hiring a lawyer who is charismatic, and a great speaker, if they lack the knowledge to present your case properly and to make the correct arguments either in court to the opposing counsel.

Whenever you look for expert help in any field, but particularly in personal injury law, look for both qualities in your lawyer. Look for a great and successful lawyer. This isn’t always easy. Ask around at work, friends and family for references. Listen carefully to what they say. Ask your existing personal lawyer for their referrals. Interview lawyers and evaluate their business and their knowledge. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how often they have success in their cases, how often they end up in court, what the fees are, how long they’ve been in practice. Your initial consutlation should be free.

If you have been injured in an accident, whether that’s a car or slip and fall, you need the best representation to ensure your case is successful.
