Manulife

Manulife has been a leading Canada based financial services group operating in Asia, and North America for over 125. They are one of the largest financial services and insurance companies in the world, providing health insurance, life insurance, critical illness and disability insurance, and travel insurance. They are one of Canada’s leading group insurance providers handling both long and short-term disability policies.

As a experienced personal injury and disability insurance lawyer, Rob Deutschmann and his legal team is dedicated to assisting those who have had their disability benefits wrongly denied by the disability insurer. His team has successfully protected the rights of injured people in Ontario for over 20 years, and has a proven track record recovering fair settlements.

Rob’s client has been suffering from chronic pain and depression. The client qualified for disability benefits and received disability benefits for two years. After two years there was a change in the definition of disability. It changed from disabled from your own occupation in the first two years to disabled from any occupation after two years. The adjuster for the disability insurer sought to have a medical assessor review the medical notes and records on file. The medical assessor suggested obtaining updated medical records and to have a psychological assessment completed. The adjuster obtained updated medical records and proceeded to terminate the disability benefits for the client. The client continued to be disabled due to chronic pain and depression. We were able to obtain reports from the client’s treating physicians and medical experts to show that the client continued to be disabled from any employment. Further, we were able to highlight that the adjuster for the insurer failed to follow the instructions from their own internal medical examiner and prematurely discontinued the benefits. A claim was initiated on behalf of the client and pressure was maintained on the disability insurer through the litigation process. The parties were able to resolve this matter through mediation and provide the client with financial relief to continue with treatment and try and return to the working world when the client is ready.
