Treatment of TBI can reduce depression and risk of suicide

June 13, 2013, Kitchener, Ontario

Posted by: Robert Deutschmann, Personal Injury Lawyer

After studying the brains of suicide victims with TBI researchers have concluded that there may be a strong connection between the inflammation of the brain caused by the injury, and the depression of the patients. Risk of suicide rises with each concussion experienced by patients. Those individuals at highest risk for repeat concussions are military and professional athletes such as football players, boxers, and hockey players.

The new treatment being advocated interrupts the inflammatory cycle in the brain that can persist for years after TBI. It consists of a series of perispinal injections and oral medications for a couple of months. According to neurosurgeon Rolando Hernandez the treatment is favoured for many reasons, the therapeutic window is wide, the treatment is short term but long lasting, and recovery can begin after minutes.

Research into the somewhat controversial treatment continues, but this may offer hope to those suffering mood disorders following tbi.
