A new paper published in July 2021 has concluded that certain symptoms are shared commonly in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic brain injury (PTSD) and that the two conditions can exist together and worsen the prognosis of the patient.

“The psychological trauma associated with events resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important and frequently overlooked factor that may impede brain recovery and worsen mental health following a TBI. Indeed, individuals with comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and TBI have significantly poorer clinical outcomes than individuals with a sole diagnosis.”

This is important news for the caregivers of individuals with TBI and for the medical professionals treating them.

The paper goes on to not that emotional dysregulation is a common factor leading to poor cognitive and affective outcomes in patients following TBI.

The researchers attempted to determine how the circuitry of the brain is affected. Post-injury molecular processes stemming from emotional trauma or physical trauma can adversely impact brain systems and result in changes to emotional regulation. This in turn may lead to system level changes in brain function and structure.

The future of successful treatment of individuals with PTSD and/or TBI depends on early intervention and the ability to address the emotional and physical impacts of the injuries. You can read more about the research here.
