A recent large cohort study conducted by James F. Burke, MD, and colleagues from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor collected data form California on 1,173,353 trauma patients, of whom 436,630 (37%) had TBI. All of the patients were admitted to emergency departments or hospitalized.

In a 28 month follow up period the researchers found that patients who had suffered TBI were more likely to have suffered a stroke in that time. The TBI stroke victims were:

  • slightly younger than the average stroke victim
  • were more likely to be male
  • had a higher injury severity score as a result of stroke

The study concluded that TBI is associated with stroke independent of other factors. The entire study can be found in the Medical Journal Neurology.
