COVID-19 UPDATE

Traumatic brain injury in children can cause significant damage to memory and academic achievement.

A recent report published in the Journal of Neurotrauma has found that TBI in children is associated with reduced cognitive function, psychosocial function, and reduced working memory.

These factors are thought to contribute to an overall reduction in academic achievement, reasoning, and complex learning. The study is particularly informative as it analysed specific areas of the brain which were involved in the poor performance of the children.

The importance of preventing the first and all subsequent TBI in children cannot be overstated. Parents need to be vigilant during high risk activities such as contact sports, skate boarding, cycling and skiing ensuring that helmets are worn to prevent skull trauma. Any fall or blow to the head can cause TBI and any symptoms of concussion should be treated immediately by medical professionals.
