Slip and fall accidents are resulting in an increase in TBI in the elderly.

A new study from Finland has found a dramatic increase in the rates of people aged 80 and older being admitted to hospital due to falls. The rates of TBI in the elderly over the last 40 years has increased by over 300%.

While the cause of the increased rates of TBI have not been determined it could be contributed to many factors including a more active population and better diagnosis. The study authors plan to conduct further studies in order that interventions for falls and injury protection can be initiated.

I regularly see the victims of slip and fall accidents in my practice. Many of the accidents may have been preventable. Sadly, some people delay seeking medical care shen the fall, not understanding how serious an injury a blow to the head can be.  Please be certain to carefully monitor anyone who falls and hits their head. In high risk populations such as the elderly you can take the following simple steps to prevent slip and fall accidents in the home:

  • remove clutter from the floor
  • remove throw rugs from the floor altogether
  • use a grab bar in the bath and bench int he shower
  • do not climb ladders or onto chairs - ask for help
  • clear stairs and walkways of snow and ice
