Even shopping cart joy riders can be entitled to accident benefit medical coverage.

The Waterloo Region Record reported a crazy accident that occurred in Sydney, Australia.  Two people were joyriding in a shopping car pulled by a car when they collided with an oncoming car, resulting in the death of one rider and serious injuries to the other.  Unfortunately, the desire to joy ride and perform reckless stunts with a car is common around the world, including here in Waterloo Region (Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge).  Often it is young teenagers that are the primary parties involved in these sorts of stunts that can result in very serious and catastrophic injuries.

Where a person in injured in an accident in Ontario, involving a motor vehicle, then the injured person is entitled to receive accident benefits regardless of who is at fault for the accident.  Generally each party to an accident would seek accident benefits for medical and rehabilitation treatment from their own insurer.  However, there are times when a party injured in an accident will not have auto insurance, perhaps because they do not have a car or the coverage has lapsed.  In that event, then the injured party would be able to obtain medical and rehabilitation benefits from the insurer for the other vehicle involved in the accident.  Usually the person without coverage is a pedestrian or bicycle rider who does not own a car or other motor vehicle and therefore does not have auto insurance coverage.  When that occurs then the injured party, even a joy rider in a shopping cart, can apply to the insurer for the car involved in the accident for accident benefits.  This can include benefits for income loss, attendant care, medical and rehabilitation benefits.
