Shock absorbing Wheelchair wheels are a reality.

Wheelchairs can be hard to propel and uncomfortable to ride in over uneven terrain. Even on level ground they are only about 80% efficient, with up to 30% of the energy being put into the wheel being lost due to the lack of a suspension.

Wired Magazine featured a brilliant innovation this month. An Israeli farmer who broke his pelvis in 2008 resolved to continue farming in his wheelchair. He was struck by the amount of pain he suffered though from travelling over the uneven ground in his wheelchair, and by how hard it was to propel himself. His concept for a shock absorbing wheel was turned into reality by a company called SoftWheel.

The wheels have three mechanical cylinders that absorb shocks in the wheel before they are transferred to the chair. The wheels are especially attractive as they are backwards compatible. This means that they can be mounted onto existing wheelchairs in less than half an hour. They are a premium price at the moment but their price may well be worth it in the added comfort of the ride. I look forward to seeing them in use.
