Self driving cars are on the horizon, but they aren't safer than human drivers yet.

It is hoped that when perfected, automated cars will reduce the number of accidents on the road by at least 80%. In real terms that would mean of the 2077 people who died in car crashed in Canada in 2012 about 1500 of them would have been saved. The number of injuries would be significantly reduced as well. Manufacturers acknowledge that automated cars are not yet safer than human drivers but as their capabilities grow they are predicated to become safer.

Some researchers, however, are not certain of these claims. A new report from the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute concluded that “It’s unclear whether human or machine would respond faster and better to jaywalkers, mechanical problems, potholes or bad weather”.

We are all following the evolution of automated cars, and their success or failure will be of interest to everyone. Ultimately the real challenge will be their adoption by drivers.
