The Risk of Dementia Increases in Adults With a History of Traumatic Brain Injury

November 10, 2014, Kitchener, Ontario

Posted by: Robert Deutschmann, Personal Injury Lawyer

Car accidents, slip and falls, and workplace injuries are all leading causes of traumatic brain injuries in adults in Canada. It is important to consider the long term outcomes of people injured in accidents.

The most recent study published in JAMA Neurology examined the importance of TBI as a risk factor in developing dementia. Mild, moderate and severe TBIs were candidates for the study. A total of almost 52,000 patients with trauma including TBI were examined.

The study determined that a moderate to severe concussion in adults aged 55, or a mild TBI at the age of 65 were related to an increased rate of the onset of dementia. It also suggested that younger adults may be more resilient than older adults.
