COVID-19 UPDATE

New Research on TBI is focusing on fruit flies.

A University of Wisconsin - Madison researcher noticed 40 years ago that when he accidentally hit a vial full of fruit flies they all were stunned for several minutes but then returned to flying around after a few moments. Since then he has been researching head injuries and recently recalled this observation he made so long ago.

Fruit flies have their brain encased in a hard shell similar to the human skull. Dr. Ganetzky designed an experiment with Dr. Wassarman to describe a way to inflict trauma to the fruit flies similar to human concussions. They found that

  • as with humans, few flies die from the immediate impact
  • afterwards flies showed many of the same physical consequences as humans including temporary incapacitation, loss of coordination, neurodegeneration, and in some cases early death.
  • older flies are more likely to suffer negative TBI effects
  • genetics seem to play a role in TBI susceptibility

The researchers "want is to understand the immediate and long term consequences in cellular and molecular terms," says Ganetzky. "From that understanding we can proceed in a more directed way to diagnostics and therapeutics."

They have filed for patents on their findings, which have garnered interest from pharam and other research communities.
