Repeat Offenders Remain a Serious Problem

Most people understand that drinking and driving is wrong, illegal and has tragic consequences. For some though there seems to be a disconnect between what they know to be true, and their actions.

For a very small segment of the population repeat drunk driving is a serious problem, and officials are trying to determine how to address the problem. The recent case in Richmond Hill illustrates this point. A woman accused in a hit-and-run drunk driving accident had been convicted of drunk driving in 2013, after being arrested with twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

At that time she was disqualified from driving for a year, and was fined $1,200. Her car insurance rates would have increased dramatically as well.

Some jurisdictions have tried ever increasing penalties for repeat offenders, mandatory driver rehabilitation, and residential programs for drug and alcohol abuse. Sadly none of the programmes seem to reduce the repeat offender rate for hard core offenders.
