CAA released its annual online survey of the worst roads in Ontario and Franklin fell from first place to fourth.  Geographic area includes Huron County, Brant County, Middlesex County, Norfolk County, Oxford County, Perth County, Waterloo Region and more. Franklin is making some improvements!

The City of Cambridge points to the success of the six new roundabouts in resulting in higher rankings for Franklin. They have turned out to be fairly effective and traffic is moving along smoothly according to Cambridge’s Regional Councillor Karl Kiefer. Things were very rough during the construction period, but as that is coming to a close, drivers are getting through more quickly.

On the downside, the Region of Waterloo has 3/5 of the top 5 worst roads in the survey area. Franklin Blvd. (Cambridge), Northfield Drive West (Waterloo), and Weber East (Kitchener) all made the top 5. The major issues identified by respondents to the survey were crumbling pavement and potholes. According to the CAA these are the common complaints for most roads.

The CAA ranked Burlington Street East in Hamilton as Ontario’s Worst road, with Dufferin Street in Toronto taking second. Fortunately for us, Waterloo Region didn’t make the top 10 provincial road list.

Poor roads cost drivers time and money due to the damage caused to vehicles. Roads in poor condition also are costly in terms of man hours and tax dollars for continuous repairs. They pose special hazards for cyclists who must avoid both road hazards and cars to avoid being in an accident. Poor roads are also associated with an increase in car accident rates.

Ontario Municipalities are responsible for 140,000 kilometres of road ways and more than 15,000 bridges and culverts.
