While driving in the winter can be challenging, having a clean road to drive on those cold days can make a huge difference in getting to your destination safely.

In an article printed in the Waterloo Record on Monday, June 27th, an Ontario auditor general’s report assessing road maintenance in the winter of 2014, claimed the province had been cleaning off roads in a below-standard rate; resulting in the decline in winter road safety across Ontario, specifically in regions across northern Ontario.

Since the 1980’s Ontario has privatized winter road maintenance; completely privatizing it in 2000 under five contractors for 20 areas. In 2009, Ontario switched to a performance contract, meaning that contractors can decide how to meet maintenance requirements and what roads need to meet these requirements.  A lack of clean roads can increase risks of car accidents and injuries.

In response to this report, the Ontario government has given Transportation Minister, Steven Del Duca, $5 million to cover costs of new equipment, resources, website updates and programs to keep citizens aware of weather conditions and keep them safer on our roads.  Full story online at
