Rugby Players Concussion in professional sport is common. Fortunately, it is becoming more common for professional athletes to discuss the impact concussion has had on their lives. It opens the door for amateur athletes to admit and discuss their injures as well.

The case that brings this to mind today is reporting on Shaun Higgins, a professional rugby player in Australia. Mr. Higgins has been open about the impacts a concussion is having on his life. He sustained a blow to the head that took him out of the game. He worried there may be some ‘strife’ involved in his decision but has found support from the AFL (Australian Football League).

Mr. Higgins has been recovering from his first major head injury and says that the recovery is unlike any other injury he’s ever had. With other injuries he’s known that he could work through them, that they would heal, and he would again be strong. He says that with the head injury it’s difficult to explain, but he knows that something simply ‘isn’t right’. He now appreciates the impact of concussion on players and their families and appreciates the work his league has been putting into concussion education.

Mr. Higgins was knocked out mid game and spend a night in hospital. The recovery process has been a long one, and his coaches are giving him the time he needs to recover fully from the injury.

With the NFL an CFL finally acknowledging the dangers faced by athletes sustaining concussions and repeated concussion it is good to see that other pro sports leagues are taking the issue seriously as well.
