Post-concussion syndrome is a serious and complex disorder that will impact the quality of life of those impacted. Post-concussion syndrome is often associated with concussions sustained in car accidents, and slip and fall accidents.

There is no consensus on what causes post-concussion syndrome by medical experts speculate it is either caused by some damage or disruption to the brain's neurotransmitter systems, or that it may by psychological since the symptoms are so similar to those of depression. According to the Mayo Clinic physicians believe that both physiological and psychological factors play a role in the syndrome.

The symptoms can go away in as little as a week to ten days, or they can linger for a year or more. The symptoms of post-concussion syndrome can include any or all of the following:

  • Sensitivity to noise and/or light
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • fatigue/irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of memory
  • Inability to concentrate or focus

Anytime you experience a head injury which causes confusion, amnesia or unconsciousness you should seek medical attention immediately.
