For four men taking part in a medical trial there is hope again. In a breakthrough in spinal cord injury research these men have stood up from the wheelchairs under their own effort and ability.

The breakthrough has been a result of electrical stimulators surgically implanted in their spines with the ultimate goal of allowing them to walk one day. The four men have been joined by another 15 000 volunteers that have signed up to try the new technology as experimental cases. The new technology being developed by the University of Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center with Dr. Susan Harkema as the lead researcher.

The four test subjects have had other benefits from the stimulator. They can swing their legs and move their feet, and two of them can do sit ups, and all four have been able to resume sexual relations, and regain control of their bladders and bowels.  These alone would be fantastic improvements to quality of life.

To find out more information the research publication is available here.
