Neuralink Starts Clinical Trials

Neuralink is Elon Musk’s vision that by placing implants into human brains we will be able to communicate with machines by thought. The project is not entering the clinical trial phase in humans and is currently aimed at treating individuals who have paraplegia or some other paralysis. The tech firm behind the project hopes that eventually, the implants will allow humans and super AI to be on equal footings.

The current chip is described as ‘break though technology for the brain’ uses a chip 23 mm in diameter which will be implanted in your skill with tiny wires. They have already released footage with a monkey playing video games following receiving of an implant.

According to the website:

We’re designing the first neural implant that will let you control a computer or mobile device anywhere you go.

Micron-scale threads are inserted into areas of the brain that control movement. Each thread contains many electrodes and connects them to an implant, the Link.

The implant records and decodes the signals sent from the brain and then within a few hours, it can allow the chip to direct movements directly without the use of the limbs themselves.

Watching the video gives a good impression of how this works. Using implants in humans isn’t new however to date they have not allowed humans to use brain signals to directly operate computers or move robotic limbs. Elon Musk’s vision includes improving cognitive function as well.

The system can all be monitored from a smart phone for ease of use, allowing the chip to communicate via Bluetooth with any mouse or keyboard ‘unmediated and in hi fidelity’.

It’s important to note that this is not yet FDA approved.

Paraplegia and paralysis, along with cognitive impairment are commonly result from car accidents, battlefield injuries, workplace and sporting injuries and congenitally. This may offer new hope for individuals seeking to live more normal and independent lives.

Again, according to the website,

The initial goal of our technology will be to help people with paralysis to regain independence through the control of computers and mobile devices. Our devices are designed to give people the ability to communicate more easily via text or speech synthesis, to follow their curiosity on the web, or to express their creativity through photography, art, or writing apps.
