COVID-19 UPDATE

Most People with Concussions have a Negative MRI or CT Scan

December 30, 2013, Kitchener, Ontario

Posted by: Robert Deutschmann, Personal Injury Lawyer

Until now most concussions have gone undiagnosed, and diagnosis of TBI and concussion has been based almost entirely on subjective patient descriptions of symptoms like headache, dizziness and memory loss. The clinical imaging methods that do exist can only identify large scale (macroscopic) changes like bruising, tears or the accumulation of blood or blood clots.

Thanks to the recent enormous influx of funds from the US Military, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine are experimenting with a new method of identifying TBI using PET (positron emission tomography). This method allows researchers to identify brain injury on a PET scan by using radioactive tracers which are attracted to damaged areas of the brain. The researchers are now testing the safety of the radioactive compounds for this use.

There is no indication yet when this diagnostic tool may become mainstream.
