Man of No Fixed Address Steals Ambulance

You may have heard the news last week that someone stole an ambulance in Cambridge and took it for a ride. This incredibly dangerous theft not only endangered the thief’s life, the police, and those on the road around him, it could also have caused a shortage of ambulances in the Region, endangering anyone who may have need a quick response from paramedics.

A 29-year-old man of no fixed address was taken into custody by police after being stopped with a spike belt. The man noticed the ambulance unattended at Cambridge Memorial Hospital sometime around midnight, and for no apparent reason, decided it would be a good idea to steal it.

The hospital notified police who then began a search for the vehicle. Police noted an erratically driven ambulance on the 401 near Halton heading into Toronto. The man was driving with the sirens on. Police followed the ambulance, and the OPP then gave a lengthy pursuit at high speed of the ambulance as it drove around the GTA.

They finally stopped the ambulance at 6:30 AM near Rainbow Valley Road on highway 26, after several hours and 190 km of driving. Thankfully no one was injured, and no car accidents resulted from the chase. Police still have no idea why the man stole the ambulance but noted that the controlled tire deflation device (spike belt) was the most effective way of stopping the stolen ambulance.

The man has been charged with possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and with flight from police. His name has not been released, however, he is being held for bail.
