At a public meeting in the end of June the MTO released some details regarding the widening of the 401 through Cambridge. Their plans show that they intend to close the only dedicated pedestrian and cycling linkage between the two sides of the 401 for three years.

Reports indicated that several hundred people use the trail daily to move back and forth under the highway. The trail is also the 'spine' of the cities trail system. Members of the public are now aware of the plans and are beginning to voice their opposition.

Currently there is no safe way for cyclists and pedestrians to cross over the 401. The bridge that passes over the 401 does not have bike lanes and forces pedestrians and cyclists to travel along a very busy road, requiring the crossing of several entrance and exit ramp lanes of for the 401. There is no question that risk to life will be increased particularly in the morning and evenings and at night.

There has to be a solution that will allow for the safety of the citizens that commute on foot and by bike.
