Headaches following mild to moderate TBI are a common complaint.

Headaches are extremely common following TBI. They are caused initially after a severe TBI by pooling of blood or liquid inside the skull. The headaches can be long lasting and may come and go for a year or more.

Following a severe concussion or even a mild one the headaches can be caused by changes in the brain itself, and by head, neck, and skull injuries. The headaches fall into several categories including:

  • cervicogenic (resulting from injury to muscles and soft tissue)
  • tension headaches
  • migraines
  • rebound headaches (caused primarily by medication)

Often victims find that the headaches make it difficult to complete daily activities. They can cause memory and thinking problems, and can affect mood and patience. Your physician can help you in the treatment of the headaches in an appropriate manner. You may be prescribed medication, acupuncture or message, or told to try meditation and ice/cold packs.
