Girls with traumatic brain injury suffer different behavioral problems than boys.

Given the findings of a recent study of 9000 Ontario teens that girls are more likely to suffer psychological distress post TBI than boys health care professionals are again raising the alarm bells over treatment of TBI.

One theory for the difference in post-concussion symptoms is that girls are simply more honest in the self-reporting of their symptoms. Another is that the differences are due to hormonal variance, treatment protocols and cognitive ability.

With 1/5 teens reporting serious head injury in their lifetime the number of children who will be disabled in the short term and long term is very significant. At this point there is not reliable imaging or blood test to diagnose TBI. When treating concussions it is important to watch for any changes in a child's behavior or mood over days and months.

Sport injuries continue to be the largest cause of TBI in children.
