The car making giant Ford has entered into the bicycle technology market patenting an automatic kickstand for bikes. The technology would mean that riders never need to put their feet down, even when a bike is completely at a standstill. The idea behind the patent is that it could help non able bodied riders falling off their bikes so easily. It may also help older, or novice cyclists stopping and starting more safely as they wouldn’t have to balance the motionless bike.

The patent describes the kick stand as being a ‘telescopically deployed support arm’, and it can be used to stabilize the bike when there is no curb or railing to use. The company has announced that it will offer them at an affordable price but has not yet given a release date.
