Exoskeletons are becoming increasingly commonplace in Canada.

Cyborgs were once the realm of Star Trek and other science fiction, but we now see the technology portrayed in the movies being used in real life throughout Canada.

As 3-D printing costs lower, and the technologies behind exoskeletons improve the use of the life changing devices is on the rise. Denny Ross broke his back at the T2-3 four years ago. For the last few months he’s been attending rehab in Edmonton, donning the exoskeleton and practicing walking.

He is up to 1.5 km at a go now, and is getting ready to head outside to learn to navigate curbs and sidewalks.

The cost of the exoskeleton is still very high at $84,000. In this case it was purchased by the Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre and is being leased to the University of Alberta to allow researchers to determine who can benefit the most from using the device. You can watch a video of Danny walking here.
