Driving impaired can cost you a lot, including your children.

A couple of unbelievable news reports lately involving impaired drivers with their children in the car, Children cannot make the informed decision to refuse to get into a car with a drunk driver. I thought it would be worth the time to briefly discuss the consequences of that activity.

A repeat offender in Maine last month, was stopped after an 11 mile pursuit travelling at 198 km/h with her unsecured children in the back seat of her car. She had a suspended licence and had already been stopped the month before speeding and impaired with a young child in the back. Her children were removed from her.

More recently and closer to home, a woman in Barrie was arrested for impaired driving and drinking while driving, in the afternoon. She had three children in the car and her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.  She went to jail, lost her car, and had her licence suspended immediately for 90 days. Her children were taken from her by the CAS, who needless to say are extremely concerned by any such crimes.

The future for her will be difficult. She will face a criminal record, astronomical insurance rates, and will have a long road to travel in order to regain full custody of her children.  Her children are fortunate not to have been injured or killed by their parent.

Don’t drink and drive, don’t drink and drive with children in the car.
