Disposable Bike Helmet

Bike Sharing has taken off in cities all over the world. For many though, the lack of a safe helmet endangers them, or holds them back from using the services. There is no easy way to rent helmets at the drop off / pick up points, and lugging your own helmet around is not particularly practical for most people, especially those on holiday. Now though there may be an option.

EcoHelmet was created by Isis Shiffer. She too was tired of carrying around a helmet. She decided there was a need and she would fill it.   She founded a company and designed a foldable $5.00 helmet which is recyclable and safe. The waterproof bike helmet is made of cardstock paper that folds down to the size of a banana. According to safety studies it protects as well as a regular helmet. Its radial pattern absorbs hard blows and distributes impacts evenly. Although it is still in the concept phase, the product is getting a lot of hype and is currently undergoing the rigorous testing required for it to get certified for use in the U.S.

This seems like a great idea and I hope that we see well designed, safe, and cheap safety gear like this take off throughout Canada.

From the EcoHelmet website:

How can using bike share be a safer and less stressful experience? Almost ninety percent of bike share users don’t wear helmets, and nearly all report feeling unsafe on the road. EcoHelmet is an inexpensive folding helmet that can be purchased onsite and recycled when at the end of the ride.

Constructed from waterproofed recycled paper in a radial honeycomb pattern, EcoHelmet absorbs blows from any direction as effectively as traditional polystyrene. It folds flat for easy vending and fits most head sizes. EcoHelmet is designed to give cyclists the confidenc they need to ride safely in the city.
