Changes in personality are frequently associated with brain injury.

Most people understand that a concussion or TBI can cause headaches, dizziness, lapses in memory, and disorientation. Few people however, realize that brain injuries can also trigger changes in personality. The new documentary Crash Reel documents the struggle of Kevin Pearce, a snowboarder adjusting to the changes in personality following multiple concussions and a critical injury.

The causes of temperament change aren't well understood at this point although it is suspected that damage to the frontal lobes which are thought to control 'executive functions' may play a role by impeding an individual's ability to control impulsive behaviour. The underlying personality of the person does not change, however, his or her reactions to situations can seem completely unreasonable and uncontrolled. Frustrating situations can trigger bouts of anger or agitation.

If you find yourself struggling with changes after a brain injury, or you are the family member of someone who is struggling, you can find resources to help understand the changes at the Waterloo Wellington Brain Injury Association.
