The Waterloo Region Record recently reported that a motorcycle rider from Cambridge was involved in a serious accident in Guelph on September 26, 2015.  The motorcycle rider suffered critical injuries in the accident.  The motorcycle rider from Cambridge was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle around 12:30am.  The motorcycle rider was seriously hurt at the intersection of Elmira Road North and Tovell Drive in Guelph.   The car driver was making a left hand turn which brought the car into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.  The motorcycle rider was taken to Guelph General and then airlifted to Hamilton Hospital.

It is very important that car drivers pay close attention when making a left hand turn.  There are a number of potential targets in a left hand turn that the car driver may not be aware of or took the time to be aware of.  Pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcycle riders often suffer serious injured when a car driver is watching for oncoming traffic and attempts to make a left turn, without having taken the time to see if there is a pedestrian, bicycle rider and/or motorcycle driver.  Sometimes it seems that the first time a car driver is checking is when they are into the turn already.  Advice for all car drivers making a left hand turn – take your time, look around to see if the area is clear, then proceed with the turn, not before.
