Car drivers making left hand turn need to ensure the way is clear.

A motorcycle rider was injured in an accident at the intersection of Can-Amera Parkway and Arthur Fach Drive in Cambridge.  A teenage driver, age 17, was driving her car southbound when she suddenly turned her car left into the path of a motorcycle heading northbound on the same road.  The motorcycle rider was taken to Cambridge Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The teenage driver was charged by Waterloo Regional Police with making an unsafe turn.

Left hand turns require a lot of caution and surveillance to ensure that the path is clear to proceed with the turn.  This requires the car driver to ensure that there are no vehicles, such as cars or motorcycles, coming from the opposite direction.  It also requires the car driver to ensure that there are no bicycle riders or pedestrians crossing across the path of the intended turn.  Bicycle riders can be observed on the road or on the sidewalk.  Even though there are bylaws regarding bicycle riders on a sidewalks, for many children they feel safer on the sidewalk than the road.  So it is very important that car drivers give themselves enough time to check the whole area to ensure that they can make the left hand turn safely.
