In a new report released by the Region of Waterloo the regional roads of Cambridge look unsafer than most. The report reviewed a five year time period and concluded that six out of ten of the most accident prone locations is in Cambridge. According to the Region’s manager of transportation Bob Henderson, this is a coincidence. This is of little comfort to the drivers in Cambridge though.

The second most dangerous intersection in the Region is Franklin Blvd. and Can-America Parkway which saw 136 car accidents in 4 years. Fully 90 of the accidents were rear end collisions and police attribute them to driver inattention and traffic congestion. The Cambridge intersections that make the Top Ten list are:

  • Franklin at Can-Amera
  • Franklin at Elgin Street/Saginaw Parkway
  • King Street at Fountain Street
  • Franklin between Clyde Road and Savage
  • Franklin at Pinebush Road
  • Hespeler Road at Bishop Street

The roundabout at Hespeler Road and Queen Street had the second highest number of collisions in the Region. We also have the intersection with the second highest number of pedestrian accidents at Main and Ainslie Street in Galt, and cyclist collisions in the area of Hespeler Road near Isherwood and Munch Avenues.

The number of accidents, and nature of the collisions at the intersections is leading the Region ot review some street designs, and signage needs. Roundabouts continue to challenge many drivers who are unfamiliar with their use. Excessive speeding and lack of appropriate signalling by drivers continues to create havoc. The news hasn’t been all bad though, the number of accidents involving cyclists and cars was down 12% over the 5 year period, and the number of fatalities decreased slightly.

By the numbers:

  • The most dangerous time of day to drive is 5 PM
  • Fridays see more car accidents than any other day
  • January has the most accidents in the year
  • Following too closely and rear ending other drivers is the most common accident in the Region.
