Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) such as concussions are common injuries in children and athletes. Many of them go untreated and this may well have long term impacts on brain health. Now that we've entered hockey, skating, ski, snowboard, and toboggan season I thought a quick review of the signs of concussion.

Remember that all concussions are serious. Take your child or athlete to the emergency room immediately if after a jolt to the head, blow or bump they:

  • Lose consciousness/suffer convulsions
  • have an enlarged pupil
  • The have a headache
  • slur their speech or repeat themselves
  • repeatedly vomit
  • have unusual behavior

Treatment for concussion focuses on resting the brain so it can heal. Concussions occur more and more easily with each successive event. Don't let your coach, child or friend try to talk you out of seeking care. If you are in doubt then you should get things checked out.
