COVID-19 UPDATE

The evolution of 3D printing is Bioprinting but until it is a reality 3D printing continues to save lives.

While the 3D printing of bones and prosthetics is becoming a more common practice for people that have sustained injuries, it's bioprinting that has scientists excited. Bioprinting involves printing cell structures into organ 'frames', and allowing stem cells to grow over the frames to create fully functioning organs.

Bioprinting is not without ethical dilemma though. The testing of the printed body parts, the sourcing of stem cells for growth, and quality assurance of the body parts are all areas of concern. The use of non-human cells to create human organs is another point of contention for bioethicists.

The advent of bioprinting holds many promises, but as with all of the new technologies it is fraught with questions.
