Advancements in Prosthesis Making them cheaper, quicker to obtain, better

The latest announcement last week of the world’s first 'feeling' leg prosthesis is incredible. The last few years have seen an unprecedented advancement in all prosthetic technologies.

The advent of laser printing has made the production of prosthetic parts quick, cheap and highly personalized. Technology has advanced making computerized parts even smaller and lighter. The newest advancement is nothing short of revolutionary though.

A prosthetic leg has been created which simulates the feeling of a real limb. The prosthetic stimulates the nerves at the end of the stump in the healthy tissue. According to Wolfgang Rangger who was fitted with the first device “it’s like a second lease of life…it feels like I have a foot again.”

The prosthetic has small sensors that send signals to the brain. These signals have also helped to eliminate the phantom pain which so many amputees suffer from. For Mr. Rangger this has meant that he is no longer in excruciating pain and is no longer taking the morphine that he was reliant upon.

The new prosthetic limb comes at a price of between $11,000 - $30,000 . You can read more about this on the CTV news site.
