99 Year Driving Ban Handed Down to Same Man for the Second Time

A 54 year old Nova Scotia man has been handed a 99 year driving prohibition by the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. The stunning fact of the case was that he was already under a lifetime driving ban arising from a 2007 conviction for impaired driving. This latest conviction includes a 50 month prison term.

Ashley Scott has a very lengthy criminal record with 61criminal convictions dating back to 1978 for crimes ranging from resisting arrest to impaired driving. 30 of the convictions are related to driving with 8 previous impaired driving charges, and 12 for driving disqualified. Mr. Scott falls into a very small category of repeat offenders. He has alcohol abuse issues, and Crown Attorney Josie McKinney said that Mr. Scott does not do well under the influence of alcohol.

It is hoped that the 4 year prison sentence will remove him from the community for a while, and that Mr. Scott has a chance to learn his lesson. The Crown hopes he won’t get behind the wheel of a car every again.

Unfortunately, most serial drunk drivers have a long history of alcoholism, poor impulse control and poor decision making skills. All jurisdictions in Canada have struggled with keeping these people from getting back behind the wheel of a car. Rehab, residential rehab, re-education programmes, ignition interlocks, and unaffordable insurance rates all seem ineffective.
