43% of Ontario prisoners have suffered at least one traumatic brain injury.

The recent report from Toronto Rehabilitation Institute concluding half of Ontario’s inmates have suffered at least one TBI should be a cause for alarm. The TBIs are primarily resulting from a blow to the head. More than half of the women suffered their TBI within a year before their first criminal offence.

We have seen a lot of data coming in highlighting the long term impacts of TBI on the brain, including reduction of inhibition, addiction, and poor decision making ability. It is a very sad story if the ultimate cost of a concussion is incarceration for some.

According to Catherine Latimer of the John Howard Society, this is one of the

“great sleeper issues in criminology and good corrections policy. Authorities are heavily focused on mental health issues, but they don’t always look at injury to the brain, which also affects behaviour”.

More details on the study can be found in the Journal of Correctional Health Care.
