In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto found that 1 in 5 teens reported having had a traumatic brain injury that required hospitalisation or that involved being unconscious for 5 minutes or longer.More than half of the injuries were a result of sports activities like hockey, soccer and skateboarding.

The study involved 9000 Ontario youth in grades 7-12, and had several interesting findings:

  • Boys are more likely than girls to suffer TBI from sports
  • Teens who drank occasionally had a 5x increased incidence of TBI
  • Teens who smoked marijuana regularly had a 3X increased incidence of TBI
  • 5.6% of teens reported having suffered a TBI in the previous 12 months.

The results of this study should be raising red flags for parents and coaches. Even mild TBI has been shown to impact short term memory and recall in teens 1 year post concussion. The evidence of the long term damage to the brain of any concussion, and of repeated concussion continues to mount.

Says study researcher Dr. Gabreila Ilie,  "TBI is preventable, if we know who is more vulnerable, when and how these injuries are occurring, we can talk to students, coaches, and parents about it. We can take preventive action and find viable solutions to reduce their occurrence and long-term effects."
