In a recent news article it was noted that pedestrians 13 years old or younger are twice as likely as adults under age 65 to be seriuosly injured or killed while crossing the street.  The younger age group accounts for one-third of catastrophic and serious injuries and deaths in accidents involving a car and pedestrian.

In 66% of the pedestrian accidents involving children in Waterloo Region, between 2003 and 2007, the child had the right of way.  This statistic is consistent with a 2007 Transport Canada report looking at accidents that occur at intersections.  The report noted that in 65% of intersection crashes which resulted in the death of a pedestrian, the pedestrian was considered not to be at fault.  The report also noted that is becoming less likely that the pedestrian is at fault, and the driver to blame, when a pedestrian is seriously injured or killed at an intersection accident.

The seniors' average annual death rate from being hit by a vehicle is over 3 per 100,000 population compared with less than one per 100,000 for people under 65.
